Cycling At Wallowa Lake

Cycle Oregon is the largest cycling group in the state and claims to be ‘The Best Ride in America.’  Their website states, “Somewhere in America there may be a more awe-inspiring ride than this climb to the Wallowa Valley. If so, we have not found it.”

That said, one need not "go big" or go far to enjoy an awe-inspiring ride in Wallowa County. Below is a round-up of what we consider the best casual rides you can do starting from Wallowa Lake Village.

The Lake Village: For the casual cyclist, the south end of Wallowa Lake provides an easy place to cruise around without the worries of narrow shoulders and fast cars. With an abundance of pedestrians, deer and cyclists, cars creep by often slower than the 25 mph speed limit requires. All lodging and attractions are within 1 mile of each other, from the swim beach to the trails and everything in-between, making it a great place to get around with young ones as well.

To Town: For road cyclists, the highway provides a fairly easy but dangerous path to Joseph, where cars will be traveling at 55mph and there is no shoulder. Those who wish to take this route should wear bright colors and travel when the sun is high. Once you reach the north side marina, a wide, paved path, separated from the highway, provides a safe and enjoyable way to cruise into town and beyond. Get the PDF Road Routes Map Here

For Mountain Bikers: The East Moraine is a paradise of trails for those willing to first pedal up 700' of elevation gain. Numerous, unmarked, dirt tracks wind their way through the woods and down either side, offering a full day of exploration or a quick workout, depending on what's desired. For those looking for something a bit less challenging, Salt Creek Summit snow-park, 40 minutes away, offers several trails crisscrossing old logging roads with views of the mountains and canyon lands beyond. Get the PDF Trail Routes Map Here
